A hook-up turned lethal. A spurned, angry cowboy. Can rebel Maggie turn the tables before a killer adds her to the list of lost causes? Washed-up alt-country rocker-turned-junker Maggie Killian is pulled to Wyoming by an irresistible force . . . former bull rider Hank Sibley, the man who broke her heart fifteen years before. When she unexpectedly meets his Sunday school-teaching girlfriend at a saloon, Maggie seeks liquor-fueled oblivion between the sheets of a younger man’s bed. But after her beloved vintage truck breaks down and leaves her stranded in the Cowboy State, she learns her hook-up died minutes after leaving their rendezvous. Suddenly surrounded by men with questionable motives, Maggie searches for the murderer while fighting the electricity between herself and her old beau, and her new penchant for local whiskey. When the police zero in on Maggie despite a disturbing series of break-ins at her guest cabin, she realizes she’s got no one to rely on but herself. To keep herself happily in bars instead of behind them, she must stop the killer before the cops realize the man she really suspects is a jealous, angry Hank. Live Wire is the first standalone book in a trilogy featuring sharp-tongued protagonist Maggie Killian from the addictive What Doesn’t Kill You romantic mystery series. If you like nerve-racking suspense, electric characters and relationships, and juicy plot twists, then you’ll love USA Today best seller Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ Silver Falchion award-winning series.

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest and thoughtful review.

If I could compose a song to sing my praises for this story, I would! But I’m not that talented nor do I have that kind of time. While she isn’t a big fan of new country, I pick up a lot of Miranda Lambert vibes, so I hope Maggie doesn’t mind 🙂

“Mother, sister, lover, friend, artist, wild child, daughter. When it suited her, she could play a role – and fill a tip jar.”

Maggie is a force to be reckoned with and truly a live wire! Just like she could find herself a little too inebriated at times, I too became intoxicated by the mesmerizing energy that is the main character. In fact, the pages are often too small to contain Maggie’s personality! A former songstress full of spunk and sass, she wears her heart of gold right on her sleeve. She’s incredibly flawed, completely fascinating, and owns every bit of her dynamic and charismatic presence. She is an absolute spitfire that I look forward to spending more time with as the series continues. And thank goodness it does! You’ll definitely want more by the end, which I must say masterfully showcases the author’s storytelling abilities, crafting poetically stunning imagery as we fade to black.

Though everything is all Maggie all the time, the secondary cast of characters adds layers to the tension, packs on the twists and turns, and tugs on the heartstrings. Maggie’s passion is also completely contagious and consuming, which definitely adds to the heartbeat of any place she finds herself. Her efforts to reclaim Hank’s love stir up more than emotions as mayhem and murder ensue, while her attempts to steer suspicion away from herself only ends up creating more problems. But it’s in these moments that her resourcefulness and ingenuity truly shine. She’s one heck of a character that makes it hard not to support even if you only want to shake her sometimes!

“The mountains are a dark silhouette against the edge of a brilliant sunset over their peaks.”

Though I’m a firm believer that the beauty of the Texas landscape is unparalleled, the author does an amazing job of convincing me that Wyoming and Texas might possibly be more than just ideological sister states. Her ability to capture the setting of this small town in such amazing detail is extremely captivating and worthy of adding the state to my bucket list of travel destinations.

Overall, this was a fun and charming read that I look forward to continuing simply to see where Maggie takes us next and what shenanigans she’ll most certainly end up finding herself a part of!
