Talia Inger is a rookie CIA case officer assigned not to the Moscow desk as she had hoped but to the forgotten backwaters of Eastern Europe--a department only known as "Other."

When she is tasked with helping a young, charming Moldovan executive secure his designs for a revolutionary defense technology, she figures she'll be back in DC within a few days. But that's before she knows where the designs are stored--and who's after them.

With her shady civilian partner, Adam Tyler, Talia takes a deep dive into a world where criminal minds and unlikely strategies compete for access to the Gryphon, a high-altitude data vault that hovers in the mesosphere. But is Tyler actually helping her? Or is he using her for his own dark purposes?

Top Ten Strange but True Facts about the Characters
of The Gryphon Heist
by James R. Hannibal

10 – Well-dressed, even in his apron, elder statesman Conrad is skilled in the kitchen. Ask him for a simple snack and you’ll likely receive rosemary pecans or Turkish spiced meatballs. But his skills with a blade extend well past the cutting board. Threaten Talia, and see how quickly a carving knife winds up stuck in a doorframe an inch from your nose.

9 – Tech Ops guru and double-amputee Franklin Perez—known at the Agency as the Goblin King—has a dashboard hula girl stuck to the top of his server stack. He has never told Talia or Eddie that this same hula girl was dancing on the dashboard of his Humvee years ago when an IED took his legs.

8 – Frank Brennan, chief of Other Branch, loves his donuts. Everyone in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations knows this. But they don’t know he’d trade his assorted dozen for a Chick-fil-A chicken-egg-and-cheese on any given Monday. Sadly, donuts are more convenient, since the Agency has a Dunkin’ Donuts with a vetted crew right there at headquarters. That last part is not fiction.

7 – Everything about Darcy Emile is strange. Take your pick. You can’t become adept at “explosive art” without being a little off.

6 – Pilot Macauley “Mac” Plucket is a big scary guy, but he’s not a mindless brute. Even those who know him best sometimes forget he was an aeronautical engineer once slotted for a mission to the International Space Station. Unfortunately, Mac’s proclivity for fighting and gambling got the better of him, and he blew his shot.

5 – Most people at the Agency think technical specialist Eddie Gupta’s first name is Edward. It isn’t. Eddie’s father, an Indian diplomat and inventor, named him after Thomas Edison.

4 – Talia would guess that Valkyrie—the team grifter—was in her thirties. But no one, not even Tyler, knows her true age. There are whispers that an Iranian arms dealer once attempted to ascertain this information. He was never heard from again. This is, of course, only a rumor. Maybe.

3 – Daredevil cat burglar Michael Finn is quite popular with the ladies who follow the stunt show circuits. But the truth is he doesn’t know how to behave around women. Back in Melbourne, his mother went through a string of boyfriends, none of whom were great role models. Finn’s bravado is only a mask he wears to hide his insecurities.

2 – Adam Tyler may be operating under an alias. An analyst attached to the CIA’s Other Branch recently discovered that the homonym Adam Tiler was a Victorian street term for a pickpocket’s accomplice.

1 – On her first night in any new bed, and Talia Inger reads through a worn copy of The Cat in the Hat to help herself fall asleep. She has done so ever since she entered the foster-care system at age seven after a tragic and mysterious accident killed her father.
